The multinational company Novelis, a leading provider of sustainable aluminum solutions and a world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, announced the groundbreaking for a new recycling center. With an annual smelting capacity of 100 kilotonnes of low-carbon metal alloys, the facility is expected to reduce Novelis’ carbon emissions by more than 420,000 tons annually, a further step towards carbon neutrality by 2050.

“As a global leader in sustainable, low-carbon rolled aluminum solutions, we are focused on accelerating the aluminum industry’s transition to a circular economy model by increasing the use of recycled content in our products,” said Sachin Satbot, president of Novelis Asia, who added that “Doing so will reduce our carbon footprint, as well as that of our customers and the industry as a whole, and bring us closer to achieving our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.”

The Novelis recycling center is being built by Ulsan Aluminum, a Novelis joint venture. The largest aluminum recycling center in Yeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, is being built to meet long-term global demand for sustainable, low-carbon aluminum plate for cans and high-quality automotive and specialty products.

In addition, the new Ulsan recycling center will enable Novelis to increase its recycling capacity by more than 20 percent to 440 kilotons in Korea and enhance its capacity to process various types of aluminum scrap. This is one of Novelis’ latest investments to increase its recycling capacity worldwide.

Currently, the use of recycled aluminum as a raw material saves 95% of the energy used to produce primary aluminum from bauxite, reducing carbon emissions by 95%. In addition, aluminum is infinitely recyclable, making it an increasingly important sustainable material choice. For example, aluminum beverage cans are one of the most sustainable packaging, as used cans can be recycled, converted into new cans and returned to store shelves in just 60 days. Novelis recycles 82 billion used beverage cans annually, and the Yeongju recycling center processes another 18 billion aluminum containers a year.
