The beer company Damm announced the recovery of 29 tons of aluminum from beer cans for recycling. The collection, carried out over the last five years, has been carried out by more than 400 compactor machines that the company has distributed along the Mediterranean coast.

According to the company, these machines are the best way to separate the materials that people normally throw away in plastic containers so that they can be reused and recycled, facilitating the process.

Every summer the company collects 500,000 cans that go to this type of machine. This awareness and sensitization campaign began 28 years ago and the results are now consolidated. All machines are located close to the beach to make collection as effective as possible.

Inside each of the machines, up to 2,000 cans can be deposited, compacted and stored in sacks for better and easier transfer to the recycling plants. Once there, the cans are cleaned, melted and recycled to produce new reusable aluminum plates.

“We are very proud that our annual can recycling campaign continues to grow year after year and that more and more citizens are encouraged to recycle all the aluminum cans that are consumed on beaches and surrounding areas. The simple fact of depositing the can in the appropriate container is a gesture of vital importance to ensure that we can give a second life to such a valuable material as aluminum, thus promoting a circular model of consumption.”Damm’s director of energy and environmental optimization, Juan Antonio López Abadía, pointed out.

The process of producing new aluminum building sheets from compacted cans means that CO2 and emissions are much lower compared to the production that would be used if they were not reused, reducing energy consumption by almost 95%.

Finally, the brewery is making a great effort to use recyclable aluminum containers and so far 51% are recyclable. This proportion increases to 65% if only Estrella Damm beer can production is taken into account.
