Multinational Crown Bevcan has been recognized by the Turkish government for its commitment to sustainability at its beverage can facility in the country. This recognition is supported by a Zero Waste Certificate initiative granted by the Turkish government for the beverage can operations in Izmit and Osmaniye.
This award is part of Turkey’s Zero Waste Policy, an action plan initiated in 2017 by local authorities, with the main goal of collecting and separating all waste and increasing recycling rates in both industrial and consumer environments across the country. Specifically, the two plants implemented a series of measures including the reuse of wastewater through the installation of a reverse osmosis system, the reduction of hazardous waste by 80% as well as the use of chemicals by 60%, recycling and reducing waste incineration; GHG emitted during the transportation of chemicals and hazardous waste by 90%; reduction of waste deposited in landfills by 95%.
These efforts were also supported by the installation of a new composting machine to convert canteen waste into organic fertilizer and the use of a wastewater treatment process for cooling tower water, thus achieving a 20% decrease in water use.
Alp Sarioglu, General Manager Turkey at Crown Bevcan EMEA notes that “one of our greatest achievements in our sustainability journey has been to see our employees understand the impact they can have in making our daily operations more environmentally friendly. We believe that to truly embed sustainability in an organization, we must involve the workforce in co-creating our operating practices. We encourage and appreciate their continued contributions to our progress.”
In 2022, the company will focus on projects that support Crown’s overall sustainability program, prioritizing additional ways to reduce and save water, as well as maximizing our geographic position to take advantage of the solar panel system installation.
