Rio has been reborn with its first environmentally conscious carnival since the pandemic. Raise awareness of the importance of consuming and recycling aluminum cans as the most sustainable packaging on the planet. For yet another year, the Cada Lata Conta program has been present in Sapucaí during the samba school parades at the Sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).

Every Can Counts, or ‘Every Can Counts’, is an international aluminum can awareness and recycling movement that has been running in 19 European countries for the past 12 years. The program was launched in Brazil at the end of last year, in São Paulo (SP) and Natal (RN). In 2022, the ‘Every Can Counts’ program, the national version of Every Can Counts in Europe, achieved excellent results, reaching 6.2 tons of aluminum cans during the four days of samba school parades at the Rio de Janeiro Carnival.

The initiative was promoted by the Brazilian Association of Aluminum Can Manufacturers (Abralatas), in partnership with the Independent League of Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro (Liesa) and 80 collectors of recyclable materials, coordinated by the Association of Collectors Jardim Gramacho (acamjg).

Among the actions undertaken this year was the installation of an ‘Every Can Counts’ structure where collectors duly identified with PPE materials received daily assignments to collect the packages, separate the tailings and other materials and transport all the scrap. The used cans will be sold by the collectors themselves to recycling centers, generating even more income for these professionals.
