In Brazil, Abal and Abralatas have joined forces to create Recicla Latas. The purpose of this manager is to coordinate actions to improve the correct disposal of metal packaging, given the significant recycling rate in the country. Already in 2020, Brazil recycled 97.4% of aluminum beverage cans, equivalent to approximately 31 billion units.
To increase this trend, the Brazilian Aluminum Association (ABAL) and the Association of Aluminum Can Manufacturers (Abralatas) have decided to set up this management entity to coordinate projects and measures for the recycling of aluminum containers in Brazil. According to the executive responsible for this organization, Renato Paquet, the aim is to ensure the continuity of the high recycling rate of beverage cans in the Brazilian market.
In addition, the new entity will also be responsible for promoting the training of public managers and collectors. “We will have initiatives to train public managers within the circular economy and thus establish campaigns for the correct disposal of waste for the consumer” to which he adds that “our goal is to maintain the recycling rate of cans above 95%. Brazil already has a tradition in the use of aluminum, but this can be expanded with a unified management”, he adds.
Another of the manager’s objectives will be to train municipal officials in the development and implementation of Municipal Integrated Solid Waste Management Plans. During 2021, this entity promoted various professionalization courses in some one hundred municipalities.
