The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has published its revised and expanded Sustainability Charter. The new report reflects the industry’s increasing focus on sustainability and its responsibility to generate positive impacts on people, the planet and the prosperity of society.

The new charter also reflects the industry’s action-driven approach to sustainability, which strongly encourages steel producers and associations to proactively participate in worldsteel’s sustainability programs and to drive higher standards in their sustainability performance.

Edwin Basson, CEO of worldsteel, stresses that “sustainability is a business requirement and a fundamental component of operations in all industries. Ethical and socially responsible companies must be able to demonstrate to their stakeholders how they are performing and where they are going. The steel industry further reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and demonstrates efforts towards a sustainable society.”

The recent report is divided into 9 principles with 20 associated criteria, covering environmental, social, governance and economic aspects of sustainability. The leaders of 39 worldsteel members have provided evidence that they are aligned with these criteria, have signed the Charter and are therefore recognized as Founding Members for a period of 3 years.
