The Aluminum Packaging Recycling Organization (Alupro) has just launched a new campaign to encourage consumers to recycle their empty aerosol cans. The campaign, which kicked off on January 18 and will run until mid-March, is entitled ‘the solitary aerosol’ and is aimed especially at users of social networks, for which a series of creative digital animations have been designed.
From ‘Pump up the Volume’, a glamorous hairspray, to ‘Any Old Oil’, a wise old oil can in the garage, personalities will educate viewers on the critical importance of aerosol recycling. Each animated character has been designed to represent the diversity of aerosol containers found within the home while sharing best practice recycling tips to UK consumers.
This campaign is part of a broader cross-sector program led by Alupro and implemented in partnership with Ball Aerocan and the British Aerosol Manufacturers Association (BAMA), which seeks to establish an appropriate basis for aerosol recycling rates and to address the problem of aerosol recycling in a post-Deposit Return Scheme charging system.
Tom Giddings, general manager of Alupro details that “with the introduction of a DRS across England in 2024, estimates suggest that over 70% of beverage cans will be removed from the kerbside recycling stream almost overnight” to which he adds that “this makes it imperative to improve recycling rates for other forms of aluminum packaging, including aerosol containers.”
Although 95% of UK councils offer kerbside collection for aerosol recycling, it is estimated that only 46% of aerosols are correctly separated for recycling by consumers.
