Multinational company Novelis Inc, a global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, has announced that it has achieved ASI certifications in Europe, Asia and South America, marking a significant milestone on the road to achieving Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certifications in all regions where it operates. The company aims to complete ASI certifications for canmaking facilities in North America by mid-2022.

With the double certification across Europe Novelis becomes the largest fully certified flat-rolled aluminium manufacturer on the continent and positions the company to meet the growing demand for sustainable aluminium from all over the world. These certifications also demonstrate the company’s commitment to sustainability and underline its ambition to be the world’s leading supplier of aluminium with low carbon and high recycled content.

Steve Fisher, President and CEO of Novelis stresses that “achieving ASI certification is a key strategy to become the most sustainable company in the aluminium industry and to encourage others to follow our example” adding that “through the unparalleled use of recycled content, Novelis is driving a more circular aluminium system. These certifications clearly establish Novelis as a preferred supplier and a partner that is improving sustainability across the value chain.

All 11 Novelis European manufacturing sites have achieved ASI Performance Standard and ASI Chain of Custody Standard certifications. In the case of Asia, the company’s South Korean operations in Yeongju and Ulsan Aluminium, a joint venture between Novelis and Kobe Steel, received ASI Performance Standard certification. Also in Brazil, the Novelis plant in Pindamonhangaba achieved ASI Performance Standard Certification.

The ASI Chain of Custody Standard complements the Performance Standard by certifying not only responsible aluminum production, but also its sourcing and processing along the value chain. In addition, having ASI Performance Standard and ASI Chain of Custody Standard Certifications allows an organization to supply independently certified sustainable aluminum products.
