ECOEMBES REVOLUTIONIZES RECYCLING BY INCENTIVES WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW INTELLIGENT YELLOW CONTAINER.

New intelligent containers equipped with cutting-edge technology open up a world of possibilities for using the information they generate, offering new options for improving collection systems and adapting them to the habits of citizens.

RECICLOS is the Return and Reward System (RDS) set up by Ecoembes, which is already operating in 29 Spanish provinces. This container is an innovative commitment to an incentivised recycling model equipped with a cutting-edge technology ring that transforms the yellow container into an intelligent one.

This ring, developed with totally Spanish technology and pioneer in the recycling sector, is placed in the mouth of the yellow container of the street and allows to identify each container and each user, and associate it with other data such as the location of the container or the frequency with which the citizen recycles.

To use a smart bin, citizens must first register on the RECICLOS webapp. When they go to the yellow container, they will identify themselves with their mobile phone through the QR incorporated in the container and introduce their cans and/or plastic bottles of drinks, one at a time and without a bag, through the ring, which automatically recognises the containers, opens and lights up green indicating that the containers are correct.

In the following 24 hours, the citizen will obtain points, called reciclos, which can be exchanged for the different rewards available, such as raffles of sustainable products or donations to social or environmental projects in their municipality. In addition, these smart containers will continue to have a traditional mouth that can be used to deposit the rest of the packaging destined for the yellow container. This system is based on the use of technologies such as internet of things (iot), artificial intelligence, image recognition, tokenization or blockchain.

The Catalan municipality of Sant Boi de Llobregat was one of the first to opt for incentive-based recycling in 2019 with the implementation of RECICLOS. It is now being used as a first test field and already has the first 16 smart yellow containers in which these hoops have already been installed.

To raise awareness of its use, the local council and Ecoembes have promoted a public information campaign for the implementation of the initiative. The groundwork has already been laid for future projects that integrate the use of big data into the recycling system.
