Every Can Counts Foundation (Every Can Counts Foundation, an international organization that promotes the recycling of beverage cans in public spaces) has presented, on the occasion of the “World Clean Up and Beaches Day”, the results of the surveys carried out during the environmental campaign “Tu Lata Al Amarillo” on Spanish beaches during the summer. This year, the city councils of A Coruña, Santander, Cádiz, Melilla and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria participated.
During the months of July and August, teams of environmental educators toured the urban beaches of these cities with collection backpacks, conducting surveys on recycling habits and raising awareness of the importance of recycling beverage cans and other containers also in our leisure time in this natural environment.
According to the data obtained, most of the people surveyed (86%) know that cans are deposited in the yellow container and 76% indicated that they always or almost always recycle these containers at the beach. In addition, 76.8% of people know where the recycling containers are located on the beach.
Pablo García, director of Cada Lata Cuenta in Spain and Doctor in Ecology, explains that “citizens have shown that they know where to recycle correctly and this is a fact that we celebrate. We will continue working to ensure that everyone also recycles at the beach. By depositing the cans in the yellow container we ensure 100% that they are going to be recycled, a small gesture with a great environmental return since practically a new can can can be produced with the material of the one consumed”.
About the campaign “Tu Lata Al Amarillo” (Your Can To Yellow)
During the weekends of July and August, environmental educators from ‘Every Can Counts’ toured the Spanish coasts with collection backpacks to raise awareness about the importance of recycling beverage cans to fight climate change.
The objective of Every Can Counts with this campaign is to ensure that every can consumed on the beach is recycled, something that is 100% guaranteed if they are deposited in the yellow container.
As part of the campaign, a new study “Recycling habits on urban beaches” was carried out, where through surveys of beachgoers on the beach, the aim is to learn about their recycling habits in these natural spaces in order to help municipalities to improve waste management in public spaces and to learn about the needs of the population.
Every Can Counts is a European program that promotes the recycling of beverage cans at events and public spaces. This program, with a presence in 14 countries in Europe, was born in the United Kingdom in 2009 and arrived in Spain in 2015.
Since then, Every Can Counts has not stopped working to raise awareness about the importance of recycling beverage cans in the yellow container, a gesture that contributes to curbing climate change, saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions. The objective of this program is to involve all citizens to achieve a 100% recycling rate for these cans which, being composed of metal, can be recycled infinitely without losing quality.
