Heineken Spain has become the first Spanish brewer to produce its beers with 100% renewable energy thanks to the photovoltaic plant that has just opened in El Andévalo (Huelva), the largest wind complex in Europe. These facilities will produce more than 4.2 billion reeds per year (more than 2 billion Cruzcampo reeds, more than 1,200 Amstel and 800 From Heineken) with a secret ingredient, as confessed by its president, Guillaume Duverdier, on the occasion of the inauguration: “The sun is the new secret ingredient of Heineken family beers.” Now, not so secret anymore, but a follow-up example.
The new photovoltaic plant has almost 150,000 solar panels and will prevent emissions into the atmosphere of 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
With this project, which is part of an 11-year long-term contract with Iberdrola, Heineken Spain confirms its commitment to the Andalusian region, a commitment that has been with two factories, a headquarters and a Foundation for more than a century.
As the president of Heineken Spain put it: “Our beers made with the power of the sun contribute to regenerating the environment by taking advantage of a source of natural wealth that promises us millions of years of zero emissions. And an essential element of the culture, character and warmth of the social life of Spaniards. Because we all win by joining the fight against climate change: nature wins and the economy wins.”
