what is an epoxyphenol varnish?

An epoxyphenolic varnish is a type of coating used to protect and decorate metal surfaces. It is composed of a mixture of epoxy and phenolic resins that are bonded together to form a tough and durable protective coating. The phenolic resin provides the chemical resistance properties and the epoxy resin provides the mechanical and adhesion properties.

Epoxyphenolic coatings are the most universal in terms of use, offering excellent adhesion and flexibility, which makes them suitable for deep-drawn packaging. In addition, they have a good resistance to the aggressiveness of most foods and have better resistance than phenolic varnishes to the action of polyphosphates and other additives used in meat preservation.

However, its resistance to sulfidation is lower than that of phenolic varnishes. To improve this resistance, additives such as aluminum (Al) or zinc oxide (OZn) powder can be added. There are also variants of this type of epoxyphenolic varnishes that are pigmented with Al or OZn and contain a slippery additive that allows easy removal of solid products such as cooked ham, mortadella, chopped-pork and others. This variant is called “meat release” coatings.
